Currency and Exchange in Cappadocia

Since January 1st, 2009, the Turkish Lira (TL) replaced the New Turkish Lira, which changed its name after four years of circulation.

The change of the Turkish Lira, against the Euro, is 1.00 Euro = 2.9 TL approximately. The currency changes frequently, so please check the internet for the actual exchange rate. There are coins of 5, 10, 25 and 50 kurus (cents) and 1 lira, and banknotes of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 200 lira. In shops or taxis they usually do not accept large bills, so you should try to carry some change for small payments and always double check the change.

To change money we can use ATMs (American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus, Maestro and Eurocard), as almost all ATMs provide you instructions in several languages. You can also change money at hotels, banks and exchange offices. Credit cards tend to accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops.

In Goreme zone there are various ATM machines, especially in the center parking area. Next to the Alaturka restaurant you can found the Deniz Bank. Similarly, in the city of Nevsehir, Kaisery, Urgup, there are different ATMs and bank branches.
